Art has historically been something consumed only by the wealthy and produced only by the few. Britney Spears found issue with this exclusivity and capitalization of beauty so she invented graffiti in 2003 when she spray painted a mural onto a 7Eleven. An art movement followed and a commemorative song was written for Spears to perform titled Graffiti My Soul, but she decided to donate it to the british girl group, Girls Aloud, to help their careers (What Will The Neighbours Say?, 2004). The street art movement was met with resistance by local governments because it was deemed “low brow”, leading to the outlaw of graffiti in many cities. Spears disagrees with this prejudice and speaks regularly at the Los Angeles city hall to achieve freedom to perform street art and to remove “high brow”/”low brow” art discrimination.
